Alternative Transportation-My World Tuesday

Sitting at a stoplight in Lancaster County Pennsylvania I spotted this shot. Needless to say, I whipped out my camera and snapped away. The other shot of the horses/buggies was taken at the market and the last shot taken on the road back to where I was staying (note cars crossing double line to pass the horses/buggy).

Mid September 2009 I attended the annual picnic hosted by the publisher of my two books in Atglen, Pennsylvania (located in the heart of Amish country). Stayed in an interesting bed and breakfast, better less said about it (which I will not stay at again) but, overall had a most wonderful time flitting about in the Amish countryside in the rain. So wishing the weather would have been more cooperative. It rained the entire time I was there until the day I left when beautiful blue skies appeared and, unfortunately, I had to travel non-stop home (a long drive back to Virginia).

Do stop by the fab meme MY WORLD TUESDAY and check out the many contributors from all over the world. That's My World is hosted each week by Klaus and the My World team, Klaus, Sandy, Wren, Fishing Guy, Louise and Sylvia. It's a wonderful place to see the world from the comfort of your home :)

These are cool shots. They remind me of the movie "Witness" with Harrison Ford.

Fantastic shots, Erin! I've always wanted to visit there as well! You really captured the feel of the place, at least for me and it's like stepping back in time! Have a great week!

What a contrast between yesterday and today!

What a fascinating spot. The Amish are much like the Mennonites in Ontario.

Who would have thought the days of the horse and buggy were numbered? When I was born, most people still had their buggies in the barn or garage and a car, of some kind, in there too. The nag or horse was gone, long gone. I just remember them being tied up at the curb. There were cement poles, decorated, with a loop for a harness strap to tie the horses up to. And the town I lived in had two horse troughs with water pumps. A tin cup hung on each pump. I could stop and pump myself a cup of cold well water and often did. I wish I had a camera back then. But didn't.

I haven't seen Amish buggies in a very long time. Great captures, even in the rain, Erin.

Great photos, Erin. Gives the title of your blog a new meaning, too.

Good captures! Too bad the weather was not better. That is beautiful country.

Amish country makes for some interesting photo ops.
New Zealand is beautiful but so is Italy and having family there would make it even more inviting.

Wonderful shots of Amish country. I especially like the first one with the child peeking out.

Hi Erin, I was born, raised, got married, and had my children in Lancaster County until I moved to CO 20 years ago. It was so agrarian when I lived there but has since become quite bustling. Horse and buggies would pass by our house all the time (we lived in Akron). Great photos of the Amish means of transportation.

Maybe it wasn't cool to have rain but it worked for the shots. You can tell it's not just for show when they stick to it in such conditions.

Amish country would really be a place to get some magnificent photos, as you have done. What a great post!

Our local city (Bergen) is at the moment drowning in pollution due to a combination of geography, weather and lack of political will to curb the use of cars. You have here the perfect solution!

I love the juxtaposition of electric overhead lines and the horse and buggy.

Erin: The Amish buggies are always a neat site. I grew up in PA and was in Amish country and we have a lot of their communities in Ohio.

Fabulous shots. I passed through Lancaster many times on my way to Hershey Park, where I was hired to photograph all the shows. Loved the Amish restaurants (owned by Greeks), especially the ham with raisins.
